You won’t believe the margin by which India defeated Fiji

  • Indian Women's Hockey team beat Fiji by 11-0 in the FIH World Series.
  • Gurjit Kaur scored four goals.
  • India have now ensured a place in the semi finals.

India once again demonstrated its dominance in the hockey world after the Women’s team defeated Fiji by a massive margin of 11-0 in the FIH Women’s Series Finals at Hiroshima on Tuesday. As a result of the emphatic victory, the team also progressed to the Semi-Finals. Penalty-corner specialist Gurjit Kaur was in top form, scoring four goals.

India, which is the top-ranked side in the group, was already assured of a top spot in Pool A in the run into the match after the game between Poland and Uruguay ended in a goalless draw. The two finished 2nd and 3rd in the group, respectively.

India will now face the winner of the crossover match which may be Uruguay or another team that finishes second in Pool B, in the semi-final.

The Game

Lalremsiami started the onslaught for India with a goal in the fourth minute. The Eves in Blue then slotted home four more goals past the Fijian goalkeeper before the first quarter. Skipper Rani Rampal then scored the team’s second goal. However, she missed a penalty stroke in the second quarter.

Gurjit Kaur was the one to score the last of those when she converted a penalty corner in the final minute of the quarter. She sustained her form after the break as well, converting three more penalty corners. As a result, India lead by an astonishing 8-0 at the half-time break.

The last two quarters were less marauding for the Fiji team, as it managed to restrict the Indian team to scoring only three more goals. It never once threatened the Indian backline.

By the end, Kaur had four goals followed by Monika two goals. Lilima Minz, Vandana, Rani Rampal and Navneet all scored one goal apiece in the impressive rout.

Pool B final matches will be held later on Tuesday. Chile is the group leader with 6 points, followed by Russia and Japan who are in the crossover spots with three points each. Chile will face Russia whereas Mexico will battle it out against Japan.
