WTT Contender Muscat 2022 Table Tennis: India’s Medal Trial

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee of India took silver in the women’s doubles event at the WTT Contender Muscat 2022 on Saturday, losing 3-1 to Zhang Rui and Kuai Man of China in the final at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.

The Mukherjees’ remarkable run at the Muscat competition came to an end with this setback. In the main event, they defeated top-seeded Puerto Ricans Adriana and Melanie Diaz in the first round and fellow Indians Sreeja Akula and Selena Selvakumar in the semis.

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika, both Tokyo Olympians, dropped the first game 11-6, but rallied in the second to tie the game at 1-1.

Despite putting up a brave battle, the Indian table tennis team lost the crucial third game 10-12, shifting the match’s momentum in favor of the Chinese team.

In the fourth game, Zhang Rui and Kuai Man of China gained an early lead and went on to win the match 6-11, 11-8, 10-12, 7-11, and the gold medal.

As a result, India finished the WTT Contender Muscat 2022 with three medals, all of them were in the doubles category.

Besides Sutirtha and Ayhika’s women’s doubles silver, Sreeja Akula and Selena Selvakumar won a bronze in the same event for reaching the semi-finals.

Archana Kamath and Manav Thakkar had clinched the mixed doubles single on Friday.

Manika Batra and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, two of India’s top table tennis players, we’re unable to get past the quarter-finals in any of their events.
