Sania Mirza made a dream return to tennis by lifting the WTA Hobart International trophy with Ukraine’s doubles partner Nadiia Kichenok. The unseeded duo had edged past the second-seeded Chinese pair of Shuai Zhang and Shuai Peng in the final in Hobart to be victorious on Saturday.

The Indo-Ukrainian pair beat their formidable opponents by 6-4, 6-4 in a game that lasted one hour and 21 minutes.

Returning to action after a break of two years, Sania gave a befitting answer to her critics by winning her 42nd WTA doubles title. The event was made more special with her son Izhaan present with her in the court.

The 33-year-old had chosen not to compete on the WTA circuit for the 2018 and 2019 seasons in order to settle her family with former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

Sania will now be aiming for her third Grand Slam at the Australian Open which starts on Monday. The tennis star has earlier won a mixed doubles title in 2009 followed by another doubles in 2016.

The Game

The game was a tightly-played affair, balanced neatly at 4-4, 40-all. However, Sania and Nadiia clinched the crucial break which earned them the opportunity to serve out the set.

What followed was not as thrilling, as Sania and Nadiia comfortably pocketed the first set. The duo then started the second set dominantly, breaking the Chinese rivals to take an early lead. They nicely consolidated the break early on.

The drop in the Chinese players’ game was evident as they kept dropping serves over and over in the third.

However, the East Asians returned back into the fourth game to do some damage repair.

From a 4-2 lead, Sania and Nadiia again let the game reach a 4-4 deadlock in the eighth game.

And this time around as well, the Indo-Ukraine pair again rose to the occasion and broke Zhang and Peng for one final time in the 9th game before serving out the match in the following.

Sania and Nadiia will split the prize money of USD 13,580 amongst themselves besides earning 280 ranking points each for their victory.
