The ad-hoc committee for wrestling, appointed by the IOA (Indian Olympic Association), is expected to delegate the task of organizing trials for the World Championships to the elected office-bearers of WFI (Wrestling Federation of India). They are likely to issue a directive to this effect within the next day or two.

On August 12, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will elect its new office holders, giving them just four days to organize the Worlds trials and send the entries, which close on August 16. From September 16 to 24, the World Championships will be contested in Belgrade, and 90 Olympic quota spots for the 2024 Paris Games will be up for grabs.

Initially, the ad-hoc panel had scheduled the trials to take place around August 10, with a notification expected between August 1-3. However, a reliable source from within the ad-hoc committee revealed on Thursday, under the condition of anonymity, that a majority of the panel members now prefer the elected WFI office-bearers to handle the organization of the trials, aiming to steer clear of further controversies.

The Source informed:

“The ad-hoc panel is planning to hand over the task of organising trials to the elected body. The thinking is that, the new office-bearers will still have 3-4 days to organise the trials and send the entries before the August 16 deadline.”

Wrestlers, their instructors, and parents protested the exemption provided to Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia (65 kg freestyle) and Asian Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat (53 kg) during the trials for the Asian Games held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi on July 22–23.

While Bajrang and Vinesh were the preferred choices, the IOA ad-hoc panel received criticism for submitting the names of the trial winners- Antim Panghal and Vishal Kaliraman, as backups. Antim and Vishal additionally appealed the ad hoc committee’s verdict to the high court, but their case was dismissed.
