Wrestling Ad-hoc Panel to Hold U15, U20 Nationals For 2023 in January-February This Year

The ad-hoc committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), responsible for overseeing wrestling in the nation, is set to host the U15 and U20 National Wrestling championships for the preceding year in January-February. This initiative aims to prevent young grapplers from losing a valuable year of competition. Recently, a significant number of aspiring wrestlers gathered at Jantar Mantar, expressing their frustration towards Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat. The athletes accused the trio of disrupting wrestling activities in the country and hindering their careers for a year due to their protests. Notably, these top wrestlers have been engaged in protests since January of the previous year, advocating for action against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They allege that Singh has been involved in the sexual harassment of female grapplers.

The recently elected WFI administration led by Sanjay Singh had declared the U-15 and U-20 Nationals to be conducted prior to December 31 of the previous year, aiming to prevent a loss of an entire year for junior wrestlers. However, the Sports Ministry suspended the administration a mere three days after assuming office. This situation has left numerous young wrestlers, on the brink of reaching the ages of 16 and 21, frustrated over what they perceive as a “wasted” year. Winning medals at National Championships holds significance for them, as it can open avenues for government jobs and other incentives. The ad-hoc panel has also indicated that the Nationals for the calendar year 2024 will be conducted separately at a later date.
