The Athletics Federation of India has announced the names of 20 sprinters for the World Relays. The event will kick-start from May 1st at the Slaski Stadium, Chorzow, Poland. It will be the 1st major International event for the Indian sprinters since the Asiad Championships (Doha, April 2019). The top 8 teams of the event will automatically qualify for The Tokyo Olympics 2021.

S Dhanalakshmi, the rising star of Indian track and field was also named in the team. Archana Suseendran, Himashree Roy, and AT Daneshwari were the other athletes included in the team. S Dhanalakshmi was in news last month as she beat the national record holder, Dutee Chand. She beat her in the finals of women’s 100 m sprint in the Federation Cup, Patiala.
Indian athletes will also participate in the men’s 4×400 m and women’s 4×400 m relays in the tournament.
The mixed relay team of India (4×400 m) has already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. The team reached the finals of the World Championships in Doha, 2019.
“We and players are excited for the 1st International competition after the Covid-19 induced gap,” AFI President Adille Sumariwalla said in a press release.

“We had organized meets in NIS Patiala in February- March to get our athletes a feeling of competition.”
Sumariwalla said that AFI is happy, its focus on women’s 100 m sprinters in the national camps has paid off positively.
“S Dhanalakshmi rising on the scene in the Fed. Cup last month was a good sign for Indian athletics, she and Dutee Chand are two Indian sprinters who ran under 11.50s this season.
“We believe, India’s 4×100 m women’s team with, Dutee, Dhanalakshmi, Hima Das, and Archana Suseendran has a lot of potentials,” he said.
