Very few people have been able to compete against Novak Djokovic in Tennis. Apart from Nadal, Federer, Murray, or Wawrinka, no one has been able to trouble him. The 23-time Grand Slam Champion had last lost his match at Wimbledon back in 2013. He was untouched on the court for a decade. If beating Nadal on clay is a dream for all, beating Novak possesses a similar challenge. But on Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz, a man with high hopes and flawless technique stepped up on the court with a performance of ages.

Carlos coming from the country of Spain, has that inherent fighting attitude giving it everything on the court till the last point. The 20-year-old is built differently. He has ice running through the veins a proper all-round technique and the ability to dominate the rallies. His rapid and reliable serve, crisp forehands, powerful backhands and an excellent net play makes him a complete player. His mobility and ability to quickly cover the court makes him a beast. He did to Djokovic what Djokovic does to his opponents. Sunday’s final was reminiscent of the 2008 Final where Nadal made everyone believe that Federer could be beaten on grass. It marked a start of a new era in tennis. And so did on Sunday.

Into the Record Books

Carlos Alcaraz, 20, is only the third player younger than Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg to win the Wimbledon men’s singles championship. He is the first new male player to win multiple major championships since Stan Wawrinka in 2015 thanks to his second grand slam victory. He has prevented Djokovic from matching Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon victories by ending the Serb’s four-year reign of domination at the tournament.

Djokovic was playing on his favorite surface. He has got all the bases to covered to dominate on this surface. Carlos was expected to give a tough fight to him in Wimbledon 2023. This was a litmus test for the youngster. But the way the young man kept his calm under immense pressure situation tells you the character of the player. He was unfazed by the occasion and would always produce great shots under pressure. The young man who just turned 20 last month showed his ability to bounce back. Djokovic beat him easily in the French Open last month. To add more pressure, the Serbian rolled over the youngster in the first set beating him 6-1.

But he bounced back in style in the next set to level it 1-1. Beating Novak in the tiebreaker is one of the biggest achievements in Tennis. Novak plays low risk shots in the tiebreaker forcing the opponents to make mistakes. But Alcaraz was exceptional to win the tiebreaker from 2-0 down to make it 8-6.

Since then, he kept going on toe to toe with Novak matching his intensity on every point. He then rolled over Djokovic 6-1 in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. But the match kept seesawing as Djokovic won the fourth set 6-3. At that moment, it felt that just like many times, Djokovic would weave his magic and rise under pressure as he always does. But this 20-year-old was not going away. He denied Djokovic a break point early in the fifth set ad kept himself in the hunt for his first Wimbledon title. In one of the most breathtaking games of the Wimbledon, Alcaraz broke Djokovic in the most dramatic manner to take 2-1 lead in the fifth set. The pressure was so immense that Djokovic smashed his racket in frustration on the net breaking it into pieces.

Soon, Carlitos was leading 5-3 in the last set. It was the biggest game of his career and against one of the toughest opponents of the game. He was 0-15 down in the game but he showed no nerves whatsoever in the last 4 points. The way he lobbed the ball over Djokovic to make it 15-15 was something remarkable. How calmly he lobbed it over the Serbian in one of the most crucial games of his career! It was a stuff of dream! The 20-year-old was playing like he has an experience of many grand slams under his belt. The Spaniard hit a big booming serve followed by a clean forehand which Djokovic was unable to control as the ball thudded into the nets. Carlos raised his arms high and proud, fell on the turf and raced to his box to meet his support staff. The 6-year-old child who dreamt of playing this prestigious tournament one day, is now the champion of the grass court.
