Away with the team in the West Indies, Shastri gave the interview through a Skype call, giving a detailed presentation on the road map for the future. The CAC, which comprised of Kapil, Shantha Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad interviewed five candidates throughout the day before selecting the former India captain for the job. The candidates included Robin Singh, Mike Hesson, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, and Ravi Shastri.

While CAC had selected six candidates earlier, West Indies’ Phil Simmons chose to step out of the process courtesy of personal reasons.

In his second stint, Shastri guided the team to the semifinals of the World Cup in 2015 and 2019. As the head coach, Shastri also oversaw India win its maiden Test series win in Australia last year.

While New Zealand coach Hesson came up with impressive performances, top officials from the BCCI confirmed that the CAC chose Shastri due to his track record “Both Hesson and Moody came up with good presentations. They had a clear road map for the future,” an official said.
