In a disappointing anti-climax, India’s tennis ace Sania Mirza had to pull out of the ongoing Australian Open in order to safeguard her calf from a strain. However, she will be competing in the women’s doubles with partner Nadia Kichenok of Ukraine.

Sania was supposed to play with fellow compatriot Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles. However, she decided to restrain her appearance at the season’s 1st Grand Slam to just one event.

Sania had made a stunning return to the tennis action after 2-year maternity leave by winning the Hobart International with Kichenok.

However, she won’t be able to replicate the same in the first Grand Slam of the season having pulled her calf muscle during the training before the Hobart International. She felt a muscle strain during her successful campaign last week.

“As I speak to you I am still icing my leg,” Sania had told PTI in an interview after winning the Hobart event.

Bopanna, however, will remain in the contention of the mixed doubles. He will be teaming up with Sania’s double’s partner Kichenok.

The duo will start their mixed campaign against second seeds Shuai Zhang and Nicolas Mahut.

Leander Paes, on the other hand, will be joining forces with Jelena Ostapenko in mixed doubles. The latter had won the 2017 French Open.

The pair will sweat it out against local wild card entrants Marc Polmans and Storm Sanders.

Paes had, earlier last year, officially announced his retirement from the tennis world in 2020.
