WFI Steps into New Arena: Office Shifts from Brij Bhushan’s Home

On Friday, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) relocated its office from the premises of its previous president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, after the sports ministry had recently raised serious objections to it. The recently established WFI office now resides in New Delhi’s Hari Nagar region.

The ministry suspended the newly formed WFI panel, led by President Sanjay Singh, on December 24, just three days after his election, pointing to the operation of the office from Brij Bhushan’s residence as a key factor behind their decisive action.

The ministry further indicated that the new organization was operating under the influence of past WFI officials, a situation that did not align with the National Sports Code.

Concurrently, a number of prominent wrestlers, among them Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, as well as World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, have raised accusations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan. The case is presently under consideration in the Delhi High Court.

Following Sanjay Singh’s election as WFI chief on December 21, a close associate of Brij Bhushan, Sakshi opted to retire from wrestling. Additionally, Bajrang returned his Padma Shri award, while Vinesh chose to return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award. Their decision stemmed from their objection to a close confidant of the BJP MP overseeing the federation.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has once again established a three-member ad-hoc committee, with Bhupender Singh Bajwa, chief of the Wushu Association of India, as its chairperson, to manage the affairs of the sport.
