On the night of her tournament in Budapest, Vinesh Phogat was compelled to withdraw from her competition. This withdrawal has raised serious doubts about Vinesh Phogat’s attempt to compete at the Asian Games in 2023.
Late Friday night, Vinesh Phogat dropped from the Ranking Series competition because of a fever and food poisoning illness. Saturday was the scheduled day for her 55 kg weight class contests. On Friday, the decision was communicated to the organizers and the Sports Authority of India.
In September 2022, Vinesh participated in the World Championships and won a bronze medal. Vinesh Phogat participated in the protests against the former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. In January, she, along with fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, created a stir by raising allegations against Singh, claiming that he was involved in sexual harassment of female wrestlers.
In order to prepare for the selection stages for the World Championships and the Asian Games in 2023, the athletes rejoined to training and departed for locations outside of India. The trials are scheduled for July 22 and 23. However it is unclear at this time if Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi will participate. Prior to the trials, Vinesh hoped to test her physical preparedness at the Budapest event. She made the decision to fight in the 55kg weight division rather than her usual 53kg class.
