India wrestler Manjeet secured a bronze medal for India in the men’s Greco Roman 55kg category at the UWW Ranking Series wrestling event of 2023 on Thursday. This triumph marked the opening of India’s medal account in the tournament.
Although Manjeet faced a setback in the quarterfinals, losing to Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiyor Botirov by superiority (VSU1, 13-4), his fortune changed when Botirov advanced to the final. This progression granted Manjeet the opportunity to vie for one of the two bronze medals.

Determined and relentless, the Indian wrestler outperformed Yersin Abyir of Kazakhstan with a score of 14-9 via VPO1 (a victory without technical superiority, but where the loser scores at least one point). This well-deserved victory secured the coveted bronze for Manjeet on the opening day of the competition.
In the gold medal clash, Kazakhstan’s Marlan Mukashev emerged victorious over Botirov. Unfortunately, Neeraj was unable to progress beyond the repechage round in the 67kg class. Additionally, Sunil Kumar (87kg), Narinder Cheema (97kg), and Sahil (130kg) lost in the qualification stage, missing out on the chance to advance further.
Sumit, competing in the 60kg category, showcased remarkable tenacity and reached the repechage round. However, he faced defeat against Balbai Dordokov of Kyrgyzstan after a previous defeat to Nursultan Bazarbayev of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals.
