At the women’s singles competition, China’s 24-year-old Gao Fang Jie upset third-seeded Sindhu by 20-22, 13-21. In the men’s singles match, Lakshya beat S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian by 21-10, 21-17. At the semifinals, Lakshya will compete against China’s Li Shi Feng, the second seed.

Despite putting up a strong fight against her Chinese opponent, ranked 36th in the world, Olympic medalist Sindhu struggled to win extended rallies, which proved pivotal in the first game. In the second game, Sindhu faced complete dominance as Fang Jie elevated her performance, denying the Indian player opportunities to approach the net and execute her drop shots.
