The United World Wrestling, the global governing body, has suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for failing to conduct timely elections. According to a report from PTI, the Indian federation’s suspension means that Indian wrestlers will compete under the UWW flag during the upcoming World Championships in Belgrade.

Additionally, the quota secured by Indian wrestlers for the 2024 Paris Olympics will be categorized as NOC quota. This suspension takes effect immediately and is expected to remain in place until a new governing body is elected.

Sources close to the development have verified that the Indian Olympic Association has obtained the suspension letter and is currently in the process of formulating their response. The temporary committee selected by the IOA on April 27th was originally tasked with conducting elections within a span of 45 days.

In a prior caution issued on April 28th, the UWW had communicated the potential suspension of the Indian Federation unless the obligation to conduct elections was met. Regrettably, the Ad-hoc committee, under the leadership of Bhupender Singh Bajwa, did not adhere to this stipulated timeframe.

The WFI elections, initially planned for May 7th, were invalidated by the Sports Ministry, leading to subsequent delays in the election process.
