The five franchises cost more than $580 million to acquire, while the broadcasting rights were sold for $117 million over a five-year period. Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of India and Mumbai, earned the inaugural championship after her team defeated Lanning’s Delhi by seven wickets in the final. In 2023, India will host the 13th ICC Cricket World Cup. For the first time in history, India was chosen to host the huge event on its own. They were unable to obtain the title and were also unable to end their 10-year wait for an ICC title. In October and November 2023, ten cities held the major event. Australia went on to win their sixth 50-over World Cup title, setting a new record.

In international cricket, Afghanistan has always punched above its weight. They defeated Pakistan in a T20I series in Sharjah and were on the verge of qualifying for the second round of the Asia Cup 2023. However, their lack of expertise in ODI cricket caused them to stumble at vital moments. Afghanistan, on the other hand, made the cricketing world sit up and take note of their talent in the ICC World Cup 2023. They won their debut ODIs against three former World Cup winners in Pakistan, England, and Sri Lanka, and nearly defeated eventual champions Australia. Afghanistan was also in contention for semi-final qualification at one point during the ODI World Cup.

Then, in the chase, Naveen Ul Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai bowled Australia out for 91/7 in 20 overs. The win was meant for Afghanistan, but Glenn Maxwell had other plans. He overcame cramps, hamstring strains, and toe cramps to score 201 in 128 balls, including 21 fours and ten sixes. Maxwell was standing on one leg at one point, slamming balls into various portions of the Wankhede Stadium. It was a fantastic inning and a memorable moment in 2023.

Three of those centuries came during the World Cup, with the 50th coming in the semi-final against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium.
