The Tokyo Olympics 2021

On July 23, 2021, the Tokyo National Stadium hosted the opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics 2020, which had been postponed due to concerns related to the pandemic and was rescheduled thereafter. At this event, 15 world leaders were present to attend the event. The only city in Asia to have hosted the Summer Olympics twice is Tokyo.

Despite the delay of a year, the Tokyo Olympics 2021 kept its original name. More than 11,000 members addressing 206 countries contended in 339 contests across 33 games. An addition of 33 basketball, Madison cycling, freestyle BMX, karate, surfing, sports climbing, and skateboarding was made among the new Olympic sports that made their debut during Tokyo Olympics 2021. Additionally, baseball and softball have been reinstated in the Olympics since 2008.

Although India made its official debut at the Paris Summer Olympics in 1900, since then it has participated in every Summer Olympics since 1920. The nation sent its largest-ever contingent of 126 athletes to the Olympics in 2020.

Achievements of Athletes During the Olympics 2021

Indian Olympians won seven medals one gold, two silver, and four bronze at the 2020 Summer Olympics, making it the most successful Games for India since its first regular Olympics in 1920. The Indian contingent competed in a record-breaking 69 events and won medals in 18 different sports.

Neeraj Chopra from India won the very first gold medal in the athletics of the country and the second-ever individual gold and first individual gold since the Beijing 2008 Olympics, won by Abhinav Bindra in Shooting. After Norman Pritchard’s silver medals in 1900, this was India’s third medal overall and its first in athletics since its 1948 debut at the Olympics.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu bagged India’s first-ever silver medal in women’s weightlifting (49 kg), turning into the first Indian Olympic medallist in the sport that began around 2000. P V Sindhu became the first Indian female athlete to win a bronze medal in women’s badminton and the second Indian to win two individual Olympic medals in a row (after winning a silver medal in 2016).

The bronze medal was bagged by the men’s national field hockey team and it was the first Olympic medal since 1980. With a time of 3:00.25, the men’s 4x400m relay team set a new Asian record. The women’s national field hockey team achieved its best performance since its Olympics debut in 1980, and Aditi Ashok in women’s golf and Deepak Punia in men’s freestyle wrestling (86 kg) were placed fourth in the final rankings.
