Goa Challengers won the Ultimate Table Tennis 2023 title by edging past the defending champions, Chennai Lions, in a thrilling final with an 8-7 scoreline. The closely contested match took place at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune on Sunday, marking Goa Challengers’ first-ever victory in the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) competition.

Harmeet Desai, ranked world No. 62, played a pivotal role in securing the win for Goa Challengers by defeating Chennai Lions’ Benedikt Duda, world No. 32 from Germany, with a score of 2-1 (6-11, 11-4, 11-8). Notably, this was Benedikt Duda’s first loss in the entire tournament.

The match was finely balanced at 3-3 after the initial two ties. In a crucial moment, Indian table tennis legend Sharath Kamal partnered with Yangzi Liu in the mixed doubles, propelling Chennai Lions to a 5-4 lead with a hard-fought 2-1 victory (7-11, 9-11, 11-10). Despite the promising start, the fortunes of Chennai Lions took a downturn from that point onward.

With a 7-5 lead and only one more point needed for victory, the responsibility fell on Reeth Tennison’s shoulders to secure the win against her fellow Indian competitor, Sutirtha Mukherjee, who had participated in the Tokyo Olympics. Sutirtha displayed her prowess by winning the first two games 11-7, 11-10, leveling the score at 7-7. However, under immense pressure, Reeth managed to claim the third game 11-6, ultimately sealing the title for Goa, despite losing the match 2-1.

In their previous encounter during UTT season 4, Chennai Lions emerged triumphant with an 11-4 victory over their opponents. Meanwhile, Dabang Delhi and Puneri Paltan both secured spots in the semi-finals but faced defeats against Goa Challengers and Chennai Lions, respectively.
