The traditional martial art of Punjab, Gatka, is all set to receive a nationwide boost, as it has been added as a demonstration sport by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the upcoming 2023 National Games. The games are slated to take place in Goa in October, and although medals won in demonstration sports do not contribute to the overall medal count, Gatka’s inclusion in this year’s National Games curriculum has increased the chances of it being recognized as a competitive discipline in the next edition.

Gatka is a type of martial art that uses wooden sticks, usually 3-3.5 feet long, and shields made of dry leather to provide safety for the participants.

Harjeet Singh Grewal, the National Gatka Association of India (NGAI) chief, said in a statement,

“We have long yearned for due recognition of this game by the IOA”

Previously, the Sports Ministry had given the green light for the inclusion of four indigenous sports, which included Gatka and Kalaripayattu, in the Khelo India Youth Games 2021 that took place in Haryana.

A recent meeting took place in New Delhi between the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC), during which Gatka was granted approval to be included as a demonstration sport.
