Ledley King, former England and Tottenham Hotspur defender expressed that while Indian football has undergone significant advancements in recent years, there is a need for more effective grassroots initiatives to establish the country as a genuine global force in the sport. King stated following the collaboration between Tottenham and the Bangalore-based Kickstart FC:
“We actually got a chance to go to an ISL game on Thursday to watch Bengaluru FC. We’re looking forward to that and that will give us a bigger indication of where the ISL is at now. But I have been following the league. I have been in India about five years ago and the standard then and you compare the standard right now, it is much better.”
King expressed that the rationale behind these collaborations is to empower India to participate in the FIFA World Cup in the future, thereby enhancing the foundational aspects of football. Osvaldo Ardiles, a former World Cup champion with Argentina in 1978 and a revered figure at Spurs, serving as an ambassador, emphasized the importance of focusing on grassroots development.
