TOPS Athletes Mirabai Chanu & Bindyarani Devi approved to train in US

Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) athletes Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani Devi, have received authorization from the Sports Ministry to attend a training camp abroad. Both athletes will visit the US to get ready for the Asian Games.

At SQUAT University in St. Louis, Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu and Commonwealth Games medalist Bindyarani Devi will undergo training.

Under the direction of Dr. Aron Horschig, they will concentrate on their recovery and strength training to improve their performance in the run-up to the Asian Games.

The Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) official Twitter account shared the announcement writing,

“MOC approves a 65 days long training camp for CWG Medalists @mirabai_chanu & @BindyaraniS at St. Louis, 🇺🇸 with Dr. Aaron Horschig. #TOPSchemeAthletes will be training at @SquatUniversity to prepare for the all important #AsianGames2022.”

The athletes’ physiotherapist Tesneem Zayyad and Indian head coach Vijay Sharma will accompany them on their 65-day training camp abroad. In addition to components of their training, the government will provide coverage for various expenses, including plane travel costs; local transportation, gym memberships, and doctor consultations, are given by the government.

After competing in the Asian championships in South Korea last month, Mirabai, who had a hip problem and came in sixth with a total weight of 194kg, travelled to the USA for roughly a 10-day training trip.

The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) initially intends to send a few additional lifters to the United States for the current training camp but abands the plan. Hangzhou will host the Asian Games from September 23 to October 8.
