When discussing the teams that could potentially win the World Cup, Australia should never be written off. The only team to win the competition three straight times is Australia, the five-time World Champions. The fact that they went undefeated in the ICC World Cups of 2003 and 2007 demonstrates their dominance in the competition. Australia, which boasts a lethal batting lineup, will be headed by Pat Cummins in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

On their best days, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, and Glenn Maxwell can be a bowling lineup’s worst nightmare. On the bowling front, they have team leaders Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood. Adam Zampa has previously performed well in Indian conditions as well as in the Indian Premier League and will be an addition to the team. The all-rounders Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, and Tim David are among the most fearsome members of the Australian team. They are powerful six hitters that can influence the game with their bat and ball. This provides them with the necessary batting depth.

For the first time, India will serve as the sole host of the World Cup. The last World Cup competition held in India was in 2011, and the hosts triumphed. India will be seeking to break their ICC trophy drought under Rohit Sharma. The Men in Blue have a strong batting lineup that includes Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, and Hardik Pandya.

The spin department will be led by Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, with R. Ashwin and Axar Patel joining them. However, India is overflowing with choices in the fast-bowing category. First-choice options are Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami, with Prasidh Krishna waiting in the wings. With the added benefit of playing at home and familiarity with the pitches and stadiums, India will undoubtedly be the favourites to win the event. They will also be cheered on by thousands of fans whenever they play in the country, as their nine group-stage matches are spread over nine different sites.

Pakistan has performed admirably in multi-nation events during the previous two years. Under Babar Azam’s leadership, Pakistan reached the semi-finals and finals of the past two T20 World Cups. Pakistan also made it to the finals of the Asia Cup 2022 in the United Arab Emirates. They were also the top-ranked One-Day International (ODI) squad until recently. In World Cup events, the Men in Green have always been regarded as the underdogs.

They enter this tournament with a highly formidable batting team led by skipper Babar Azam, who is currently ranked first in the ODI batting rankings. He has support by several players, including Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, and Iftikhar Ahmed. Pakistan is also well-equipped in the bowling department, with Shaheen Afridi heading the pace unit and Haris Rauf providing backup. Supporting bowlers include Hassan Ali and Mohammad Wasim Jr. For the company, Abrar Ahmed and Usama Mir will handle the spin duties, along with Shadab Khan, the vice-captain.

The current champions England not only revolutionized Test cricket, but they also revolutionized one-day cricket. England, led by Jos Buttler, has used a similar strategy as the Test team, packing their squad with batsmen and all-rounders. This allows their top order to attack the bowling from the outset, knowing they have support in the middle and lower order. England’s ODI squad has been strengthened by the return of Ben Stokes, although he will only bat. Liam Livingstone, Joe Root, and Jonny Bairstow’s recent performances are encouraging. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid’s spin assault is excellent, but they will miss Jofra Archer a lot. England’s pace attack is diverse, with Mark Wood’s speed, David Willey and Reece Topley’s left-arm quickness, and Chris Woakes’ ability to swing the ball early.

New Zealand consistently performed good in ICC competitions, as seen by their appearances in the finals of the previous two Cricket World Cup events in 2015 and 2019. Unfortunately, both times, they experienced heartbreak. New Zealand is regarded as the frontrunner to win the ICC World Cup in India in 2023. They’ve been boosted by the return of Kane Williamson, who was out with a knee injury. Other notable players include Tom Latham, Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips, and Daryl Mitchell, to mention a few. Despite not having secured a World Cup victory, they have made it to the final match twice and are eager to achieve the title this time.
