This was perhaps the most widely documented scandal in the history of Indian cricket history. The second test of the 2007 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia was a controversial one. From a number of wrong umpiring decisions to the magnitude of sledging between both sides, this match had it all. The highlight of the match was the fight between Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds. Harbhajan was charged with racial abuse after allegedly calling Symonds a ‘monkey’ again (first time during a series in India in early 2007) and was given a three-match ban. This ban was later uplifted due to protests by players and a petition from BCCI. This scandal has been widely regarding as the tipping point in Symonds’ career.

It all started back during the 2008 CB series when the M.S. Dhoni, who was quite new to the captaincy, dropped Sehwag citing fitness issues. This incident was also featured in the ‘M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story’ movie where it was showed that Dhoni had to drop three senior players from the team. During the 2009 T20 World Cup, Sehwag had to return to India due to a shoulder injury and expressed his intent of not being the vice-captain under Dhoni’s captaincy. The rift again surfaced during the tri-nation CB series in Australia. Dhoni decided to adopt a rotation policy to rest the senior players of the team including Sehwag. Although, all of these instances were later termed to be ‘rumors’ by both Dhoni and Sehwag who said there was nothing wrong between them.

Since the inception of the Indian Player League back in 2008, it has been a starry affair. Along with entertainment, power packed line up; the IPL also has his fair share of controversies. The most famous of these fights was the altercation between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir in 2013. Virat Kohli’s dismissal was celebrated by the entire Kolkata Knight Riders’ team. This didn’t go down well with Kohli as he launched a mouthful of expletives. Seeing this, the KKR captain Gambhir also started walking towards him and both of them had a verbal fight which was later broken up by Rajat Bhatia. Other fights during the IPL include fights between Harbhajan and Sreesanth and also Kieron Pollard and Mitchell Starc.

Th India-Pakistan rivalry

It’s been ages since the nations split but the fights have been going on both on and off the field. Be it any sport like cricket or hockey, India Pakistan matches always have their fair share of drama and build up. In hockey, India and Pakistan have faced each other in a record breaking seven hockey finals. The tussle between the teams is quite evident in the Asian games and Sultan Azlan Shah where both the teams sweat it out each year to establish their dominance over on another.

In cricket, the India-Pak rivalry is one for the books. It is one of the most intense sport rivalries in the world. Their matches are very sought after (evident by the fact that tickets for the 2015 World Cup game between the teams sold out in 15 minutes). There are also rivalries between players like Sachin-Shoaib, Kohli-Amir and many more.

In IPL 2008, Sachin Tendulkar was forced to miss the game owing to injury. Harbhajan took over as the team’s captaincy and led the Mumbai Indians against Kings XI Punjab. It was their third consecutive defeat in that tournament. The off spinner, already under duress, was infuriated by Sreesanth’s combative farewells to his batsmen. When he allegedly smacked Sreesanth, a member of the national squad, during the conclusion of a group match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, it caused a great deal of controversy.

Such fights and rivalries in sports is a common affair. If you witness scorching wins and scintillating performances on one side, you will also witness ugly spats between players too. These rivalries add to the game and increase the competitive spirit. It helps in bringing out the best from the players. We, as fans, have to understand that at the end of the day the Indian players are shouldering on the hopes of an entire nation on the back and sometimes lose their cool because of the pressure. But all these fights are heat of the moment affairs and are solved sooner or later, keeping the spirit of the game intact.
