Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the 2022 sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot, is recognized for its exhilarating narrative and superb multiplayer. In another globe-trotting story filled with iconic set pieces and white-knuckle firefights, Task Force 141, and a Mexican Special Forces squad partner together to take down some bad guys. Fans especially appreciated seeing Price, Gaz, Ghost, and Soap back in action, as well as new characters.

The game was created by renowned firm Infinity Ward in collaboration with Activision’s other network of Call of Duty companies. While not inventing the wheel, the multiplayer focused on the aspects that players liked about the first games, evoking a nostalgic atmosphere. Ground War returned, delivering Battlefield-style large-scale action in 32v32 encounters, and the invasion mode was a particular highlight for players looking for a massive Team Deathmatch variant. The game not only won critical praise but also achieved enormous economic success, selling over $1 billion in sales faster than any previous Call of Duty title.

Call of Duty: Vanguard

Call of Duty: Vanguard transported players to the era that served as the series’ foundation: WWII. While Vanguard did not achieve the same heights as some other current entries in the genre, it was a pleasant respite from the “modern” and futuristic entries we’ve seen in recent years. Vanguard was a well-rounded Call of Duty bundle, with actual genius in each of its three major gameplay modes: narrative, multiplayer competition, and zombies.

The campaign featured a quick, yet action-packed tour of warfare presented from multiple points of view, much like the majority of Call of Duty games released nowadays. Though not the most compelling stories, Vanguard’s missions were varied and dependably amusing. The multiplayer, which is still expanding, has an excellent combination of maps and game types, resulting in an experience that has been enjoyable since launch and will most likely remain so until the next Call of Duty game is released. The Zombies mode omitted some of the brilliant puzzle elements from the formula, but it’s still a fun cooperative experience. Overall, Vanguard is a respectable addition to the Call of Duty franchise, although a little safe.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Treyarch’s 2018 release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 signals a significant change for the Call of Duty series since it was the first to feature no narrative mode. Even so, fans were thrilled by the futuristic military shooter, which is among the greatest in the franchise to date. The three primary game modes—Zombies, Multiplayer, and Blackout—offer significant avenues for enjoyment even in the absence of a storyline. Multiplayer was as wonderful as it had always been, offering new weaponry and mechanisms to take advantage of the game’s futuristic setting (but not forcing you to use them), while zombies provided a complex, unforgettable experience full of mysteries to discover as you lay waste to legions of the undead.

The battle royale mode, Blackout, was possibly the largest and most intriguing feature in Black Ops 4. Activision’s initial step into the battle royale genre after Fortnite and PUBG’s success, Blackout, was a predecessor to Warzone, which would come two years later. Critics and fans alike appreciated Blackout, despite its flaws, and Activision would go on to apply the lessons learned from Blackout to Warzone with tremendous success.

Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII is the first game in many years from developer Sledgehammer Games to take place in the historical setting of WWII. There will be no more superpowers, wall-running, or drones. This was back to the fundamentals. Call of Duty was designed to harken back to the franchise’s early days, and it was a formula that fans adored and embraced. WWII, directed by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, portrayed a story set throughout the European Theatre, including well-known battles and events such as the Normandy landings.

The game’s campaign was hailed for its Band of Brothers-style narrative, which followed the lives of a group of soldiers attempting to survive under tough conditions, with their friendships growing deeper with time. The absence of automated health regeneration was also significant in the campaign. WWII changed things up by ditching the create-a-class approach in favor of having players join one of a few divisions, each with its own unique set of talents and powers. Multiplayer also had a social place similar to Destiny Tower called Headquarters, where players could hang out, collect and accomplish tasks, and compete in 1v1 matchups.

COD: Modern Warfare 2

The fact that another Call of Duty game from Infinity Ward is included on the list attests to the company’s illustrious past. In the wake of the wildly popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which had launched two years previously, Call of Duty: Task Force 141 was followed by Modern Warfare 2, which was another global operation aimed at eliminating a terrorist threat. It was released in 2009. The campaign was immediately and severely criticized for its infamous “No Russian” assignment, in which the player takes part in a massacre at an airport and has the choice to finish the slaughter.

Modern Warfare 2’s No Russian Mission will always be remembered, even though it came with a warning and allowed players to skip it completely. The campaign is one of the best Call of Duty campaigns to date, short (approximately five hours), memorable, and action-packed. On the multiplayer side, Infinity Ward changed things up with a reorganized loadout system as well as an altered perk system, much to the delight of players. In 2020, Activision decided to remaster the campaign mode of the game due to its immense popularity.

Except for console-only spin-offs, Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 2 was the second Call of Duty game ever released. It told the story of multiple World War II warriors from multiple points of view. Its visuals and entire presentation style may appear old by modern standards, yet it was a market leader at the time, demonstrating how much games have grown and progressed in 15 years.

One of the most notable differences between the game and its predecessor was the inclusion of regenerating health, a system that would be included in almost all future COD games in some form or another. Additionally, a grenade hazard indicator—which was novel at the time—was included in the game. At Gamespot, we said that Call of Duty 2 is a deserving sequel to the first thanks to its engaging story, superb sound and gameplay design, and generally strong artificial intelligence. Players have largely loved the game’s head-to-head multiplayer mode.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, released in 2010, is one of the franchise’s most popular titles, and for good reason. Avatar actor Sam Worthington plays Alex Mason in the game; other cast members include Ice Cube, Ed Helms, James C. Burns, and Gary Oldman as the renowned Viktor Reznov. Black Ops was the franchise’s first step into the murky waters of what-if? scenarios and conspiracy theories that many enjoy debating.

It is set in the 1960s, during the height of the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Cameos from real-life historical personalities such as JFK, Fidel Castro, and Robert McNamara were also included in the game. The multiplayer game improved the brand by giving players more ways to express themselves and give their avatars unique looks. Fans may battle the undead in new areas with new abilities and features for the franchise in Black Ops thanks to the inclusion of the beloved zombies mode, which made its debut in World at War. Due to the great success of Black Ops, several sequels were made.

Call of Duty: Warzone

Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s blackout mode marked the game’s debut as a battle royale encounter. However, Blackout took the first steps to allow Warzone to function. Warzone sought to differentiate itself from other games in the crowded battle royale genre when it launched in March 2020, coinciding with the beginning of the actual epidemic. Call of Duty’s hallmark gunplay, weapons, and “feel” are unrivaled, and when adapted to a battle royale setting, the game thrived.

Fans of the game have begged Activision for years to provide a grand, battlefield-style Call of Duty experience. They have gotten their wish in full with Warzone, a vast area in Verdansk chock-full of hidden passages, easter eggs, and locations taken from well-known Call of Duty games in the past. Many fans could only dream of a game like Warzone, which lowers the entrance barrier and gives gamers what they’ve always wanted—a multiplayer-only Call of Duty (apart from the now-defunct Call of Duty Online for Asia). Cheating and the integration of Black Ops Cold War’s weapons are among the flaw’s gamers have raised, but the entire package is a resounding success.

COD: Modern Warfare

In 2019, Activision revived its enormously popular Modern Warfare franchise. Infinity Ward took over production once more, but the company has changed since 2007’s Modern Warfare. Top executives Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired years ago. The two went on to co-found Respawn, where they were guided to great success by former Naughty Dog members Jacob Mikoff and Taylor Kurosaki. The 2019 Modern Warfare revival was not only a financial success, but it also scored with fans who appreciated its return to the modern-day setting after 2018’s Black Ops 4 ventured deeper into the future. Modern Warfare, like the 2007 game, featured a story of warriors fighting against a common adversary across the globe.

The campaign featured numerous spectacular Zero Dark Thirty-style missions and sequences, including one notable scenario in which you play as a young girl scrambling through a house as an adversary hunts her down. It was a terrifying, contentious mission that sticks out as memorable if nothing else. Modern conflict multiplayer was praised for its wide variety of settings and modes, as well as for introducing large-scale conflict with vehicles and larger battlefields. The game’s bones, a proprietary modern warfare engine, brought everything together beautifully, and the gunplay was excellent as always. Modern combat improvements made it possible for Call of Duty: Warzone, the biggest addition in years, to be released in 2020.

With good cause, the 2007 shooter Infinity Wards is ranked highest on our list. To present a gripping, internationally traversing narrative with several turns and turns as players faced a worldwide terrorist threat, the game moved the series from World War II to a contemporary scenario. The game received appreciation for its dramatic, Hollywood-style campaign mode as well as for its calmer moments—the All Ghillied Up sniper mission remains emblematic of the franchise.

The game’s multiplayer, however, had a greater influence. The game popularised now-common multiplayer mechanics such as killstreaks and gaining experience to unlock new weapons and loadouts. After reaching level 55, players might choose to unlock “Prestige,” restart from the beginning, and work their way back up to acquire unique distinctions. Modern Warfare created numerous famous multiplayer conventions, many of which are still in use today in different versions. Activision remastered the game in 2016 and revived it with Modern Warfare in 2019, demonstrating the series’ enduring strength.
