Being an Olympic medalist himself, he was the most deserving person in the cabinet to be the Sports Minister. During his speech in the Parliament, Kiren Rijiju said that the coming year is a crucial sports year for India. He let drop on various new initiatives the Modi government has already initiated to improve the sporting culture in the country.
Rijiju said that he would facilitate Indian athletes to let their freak flags fly in the next Olympics. He is assured of an improvement in the medals tally by India in Tokyo in 2020.
Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju also said, under the aegis of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he has taken it on him to ensure that athletes get all the facilities to win big at international events. When it comes to nutrition, which is the most important aspect for an athlete, he would expunge any discrimination between senior and junior players. All would get adequate and equal nutrition after consultation with coaches and nutritionists.
Rijiju also said that he would personally monitor all SAI centers across the country so that athletes get the best while training. All former athletes who had represented the country or their state at various levels would get not only double the pension, but the government would provide them security in terms of livelihood and health benefits.
The Hon’ble Sports Minister said that on the National Sports Day on August 29, the government would make another big announcement for the improvement of sports in India. The present government, Rijiju said, is ready to provide with every financial help an athlete might need as there is no paucity of funds at the national exchequer. Apart, he would meet all corporate houses in a month to mobilize enough funds to be spent on sports in India.
