These Eye-Grabbing Numbers Show ICC World Cup is Loved Across Globe

The ICC World Cup 2019 semifinal between India and New Zealand managed to set a new world record for the highest ever concurrent views on streaming platform Hotstar, with a peak viewers of 25.3 million on the platform if the TV and digital viewing figures released by the ICC are anything to go by.

The previous record stood at a lowly 18.6 million. This is a massive sign that more and more people are preferring online streaming for viewing live event to traditional television.

Furthermore, there has been an unmatched 2.6 billion video views across ICC’s digital as well as the social platforms during the group stage.

Elsewhere, social channels of the official tournament have added 12 million new followers in a matter of just 6 weeks, registering 386 million fans engagements in the process.

In association with ICC’s broadcast partners, including the global partner Star Sports, the 2019 edition of the ICC World Cup was televised over 220 territories on as many as 46 separate TV channels. The group stages was received by over 675 million strong viewers. This again demonstrates that cricket is one of the most followed sports in the world.

Also, the official website of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup has been visited by 65 million users worldwide, with over 250 million page views registered.

The overwhelming response is also witnessed in the UK, where the cricketing extravaganza has now reached a unique audience of 20 million.

 England vs Australia 3rd Most-Watched Match in UK

The second semi final between foes Australia and England became the 3rd-most watched game of the World Cup on Sky Sports, with the first and second spot going to England vs India and India vs Pakistan matches. The ‘mini-Ashes’ added over 4,65,000 new audience.

Back in India, the high-tension game between India and Pakistan delivered a stupendous rating of 14.8 across both Star Network as well as Doordarshan. The match between India and England match managed to deliver 18 million peak concurrent views on streaming platform Hotstar.

The old rivalry between Australia and England pulled 587,000 audience on an average in Australia. This figure represents an astounding increase of 504 per cent against the same match that was played at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

Despite these good numbers, there may be some bad news in store for Star Sports. It is being reported that the broadcaster may lose as much as ₹ 15 crores after India bowed out of the World Cup in the semi finals.
