The Sports Ministry canceled the suspension of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) on Tuesday. This decision came after the PCI started its election process. Devendra Jhajharia, a multiple-time Paralympic medalist, is expected to become president. Earlier, on February 2, the ministry had withdrawn recognition from PCI for delaying the election of a new executive committee.

The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) had postponed the elections, originally due by January 31, to March 28 because of the Para Shooting World Cup from March 6–15. After the suspension, the PCI suggested March 9 as the new election date and began accepting nominations. Most of the top positions are expected to be filled without any competition. The ministry stated that the reason for suspending government recognition has been resolved.

The ministry at the PTI read:

“…since the election process has reached the stage where the nominated candidates have been deemed to be duly elected unanimously, as well as the important fact that PCI is hosting 2024 World Shooting Para Sport World Cup from 06-15 March 2024 at New Delhi, it has been decided to revoke the suspension of PCI, with immediate effect.”

The Para Shooting World Cup is set to take place at Delhi’s Karni Singh Range, featuring over 500 shooters from 52 countries. This event will provide 24 quota places for the Paris Paralympics. Devendra Jhajharia, a 42-year-old athlete who secured gold medals in the 2004 Athens and 2016 Rio Paralympics in the F46 disability category, is the sole nominee for the position of PCI chief.

Deepa Malik, the outgoing president, has decided to endorse Jhajharia. With no competition for the major positions, voting might only occur for the five executive committee slots, with eight candidates vying for them. The PCI received backing from the International Paralympic Committee following its suspension. It ensures its recognition as India’s sole governing body for para-sports.
