Adding to a growing list of Bollywood sports movies, actress Taapsee Pannu announced that she will be reprising the role of Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj. Pannu made the official announcement of the biopic on Raj’s 37th birthday celebrations on Tuesday.

Titled Shabaash Mithu, the biopic will be helmed by Rahul Dholakia and produced by Viacom18 Studios. As for Taapsee, this will be her third sports biopic after Saand Ki Aankh and Soorma. The actress is connected to sports off the camera as well, being the owner of the Premier Badminton League side Pune 7 Aces.

The announcement about Shabaash Mithu was done through an Instagram post by Taapsee. In the post, the two can be seen cutting the cake.

“Happy Happy Birthday Captain @mithaliraj! You have made all of us proud in more than many ways and it’s truly an honour to be chosen to showcase your journey on screen. On this Birthday of yours I don’t know what gift I can give you but this promise that I shall give it all I have to make sure you will be proud of what you see of yourself on screen with #ShabaashMithu. P.S- I am all prepared to learn THE ‘cover drive’ #HappyBirthdayCaptain (sic),” Taapsee wrote on Instagram.

Earlier, the actress had hinted at reprising Mithali’s role by posting an image of a cricket ball on her Instagram stories. She had then shared an image of Raj’s autograph, confirming the rumours.

Mithali Raj is arguably the most successful cricketer in the Indian women’s cricket history. Born to a Tamil family, she has gone on to become the all-time leading run-scorer in Indian cricket besides holding the highest individual score by an Indian Woman cricketer.

In 2017, she became the first player to score 6,000 runs in Women’s ODI. Later in 2017, Mithali was placed in the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year. She also holds the record for playing the most number of WODIs (109) consecutively for a team.
