Supreme Court Refrains from Intervening in Punjab, Haryana HC’s Decision to Halt WFI Polls

The Supreme Court (SC), on Tuesday, declined to intervene in the matter of the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to halt the elections of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). This action followed shortly after the WFI was suspended by UWW, the international governing body for wrestling, due to the delay in organizing its elections. Consequently, Indian wrestlers will be deprived of the opportunity to participate in the upcoming World Championships under their national flag.

A panel comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal directed the petitioner, the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association, to present its concerns to the higher court for redressal.

The apex court also directed the superior court to grant appropriate importance to the matter, in case the petitioner submits a request for inclusion. While presenting the case, the lawyer representing the petitioner informed the panel that the UWW (United World Wrestling) has currently withdrawn its recognition from WFI (Wrestling Federation of India), a situation that brings disgrace to the nation.

The bench stated that the petitioner was given the freedom to request becoming a party in the high court:

“Why should we entertain this? You go to the high court… Instead of applying for vacating the interim stay, the petitioner has chosen to approach the Supreme Court. We, therefore, decline to entertain this special leave petition.”

The highest court was considering a petition presented by the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association concerning the decision made on August 11 by the high court to halt the election process.
