Sunrisers Hyderabad History
The Debut
Sunrisers Hyderabad made their debut in 2013. Kumar Sangakkara captained for 7 games while Cameron White led for 8 games in their first season. Thisara Perera, Nathan McCullum, Darren Sammy, Quinton de Kock was the core of the team. They made it to the playoffs but were eliminated by Rajasthan Royals.
In 2014, Shikhar Dhawan led the team for the first ten matches and the latter four were captained by Darren Sammy. The team won only 6 out off 14 games and were 6th on the points table at the end of the season.
David Warner’s Innings
David Warner was made the captain of the Hyderabad franchise in 2015. Warner also was the highest scorer of the season, winning the orange cap. The team again finished 6th on the points table, winning seven and losing seven matches.
2016 Winners
2016 was a monumental season for the team. They defeated the strong Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore in the finals and were crowned the winners. In the entire season, the team won 11 games. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the leading wicket-taker of the season who won the purple cap.
In the next season, Bhuvneshwar Kumar repeated his heroics with the ball, winning the purple cap. Captain David Warner too bagged the orange cap. But, the team lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the eliminator.
Disappointed 2018 Finals
In 2018, David Warner was banned to play, hence, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson was made the captain. He led with the bat, scoring a massive 735 runs in the season and winning the orange cap. The team made it to the finals but ultimately lost to Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings who were making a comeback after a 2-year ban.
This year the team has dropped Shikhar Dhawan and bought England’s Jonny Bairstow and New Zealand’s Martin Guptill to add to their batting power.
