Subrata Murmu has already established himself as one of the promising strikers in Kolkata football. The striker who represents the premier club of Kolkata football, United Sports for the last four years has already scored goals galore and ensured a berth in the senior Bengal team for the National Games last year and Santosh Trophy for the senior national championship this year. Bengal however had a disastrous exit from the group league stage of the Santosh Trophy as they returned with a gold medal from the National Games last year.
Subrata Murmu: The Beginning
Subrata, however, was not charged up by athletics, his sister Moushumi Murmu started after being inspired by their mother Arati Murmu. Rather the 21-year-old striker was fascinated by his father Sujit Murmu who was a serious football player at the district level. Subrata who also hails from the same village, Salboni in West Midnapore in West Bengal started playing the game in his childhood at a local ground and under the tutelage of Narayan Singh, a local football coach. Then he had an impressive show in a selection trial organized by United Sports four years ago and after that, he did not look back.
Like his sister, Subrata had to face a lot of difficulties to survive. As his father manages to earn from cultivation, Subrata initially did not get any financial support from his father. Staying at a mud house, he had to start training barefoot on the rugged and bumpy ground where there was no grass. Still, he could continue playing thanks to Narayan Singh.
“I am thankful to Narayan Singh who used to buy pairs of boots, and jerseys, and provide Tiffin for all of us who used to practice under his tutelage. We were around 15 to 20 footballers in the village and Narayan sir fulfilled our requirements every day. That is why I could not feel the lack of deficiency and played the game spontaneously.”
However, Subrata had a great appreciation for the Belgian coach of United Sports, Steve Herbots. Murmu described,
“Under Steve’s tutelage, I have learned to play off-the-ball style of game. He is also highly skilled in maneuvering the footballers’ temperament. He inspires the footballers in different ways.”
Aim of Subrata Murmu
Subrata has not yet been called up to the national camp, whereas his sister Moushumi has already achieved by representing the country in the recently-concluded under AFC Cup qualifiers. Subrata knows one job will help him and the family to lead a better life. Still, his ultimate aim is to get a national call-up.
“The forthcoming second division I-League is very important to me. I must have to perform to impress the country’s football fraternity. I want to represent senior India and play for any ISL club in near future. That will be the most satisfactory for me than getting a job.”
