Subhayan then after a couple of years, began to learn the game at Calcutta Chess Academy under experienced chess coach Shyamal Dutta who was also once the coach of Dibyendu Barua and his wife Saheli Dhar.

The Run for IM Title

Subhayan is already on the hunt for the title of International Master (IM). He has acquired one IM Norm, earned in an international competition named IIFL Championship held in 2020 in Mumbai. Subhayan said,

“I could not make the rank in that tournament but my overall performance was impressive and I got IM Norm.”

Subhayan now has the sole aim of earning the IM title and to achieve the feat he needs two more IM Norms and gains 80 more points to increase his ELO Rating.

The Financial Obstruction & GM Title

Subhayan has so far toured outside the country once only. He had gone to Serbia to participate in three international competitions, but he had to bear the whole expense which cost nearly Rs 3 lakh. Subhayan’s father Subhashis Kundu is a professor. The player stated,

“It is very tough to go abroad often to play quality international competitions, bearing the expenses of your own and if I dream of becoming Grand Master then I must have to acquire three GM Norms and you cannot earn that without participating in the quality international competitions. Unfortunately, most of the quality international tournaments which will help you to earn GM Norms take place outside the country.”
