Sreshtho Chakrabarty has a dream of training under legendary Jan-Ove Waldner

Sreshtho Chakrabarty is another promising table tennis player from West Bengal. Sreshtho who hails from Naihati in West Bengal has been consistently winning medals in the state championship in the Under-13 category since 2018. The paddler has won the silver medal in the singles in the Under-13 category in the state championship in 2022. Even in the team event in the Under-13 category, Sreshtho has earned a silver medal, and a bronze medal in the Under-15 team event. Even in the national ranking zonal championships and national championships, Sreshtho has reached the quarter-final stage. His inspiring performance has not only helped him to become number one ranked in Bengal, but also earned eligibility to participate in international competitions, receiving official approval from International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

Development & the Hard Work

Sreshtho started his journey at the age of only five years at Mihir Ghosh Table Tennis Academy, playing with a local, beginner’s table tennis bat. Still, with that beginner’s bat, Sreshtho was able to prove his mettle and exhibited an impressive show within only two years. He said,

“Practicing with the seniors at the coaching center has helped me to develop. Especially, Mihir sir’s observation and guidance have helped me to improve fast.”

Besides, Sreshtho now practices at the National Center of Excellence (NCE) at SAI, Kolkata under the guidance of Chinese coach Yin Wei. Sreshtho’s father Sanjib Chakrabarty who is an employee at Barrackpore Court said,

“It is almost a seven-hour journey up and down from Naihati to Kolkata SAI. We start at dawn and return in the evening and then Sreshtho again goes to Mihis Ghosh TT Academy and practices there till night.”

Influence of Jan Ove Waldner

Sreshtho’s idol is legendary former Swedish paddler Jan-Ove Waldner. Sreshtho follows his style of play meticulously. The student of class seventh standard quipped,

“I often watch Waldner’s videos, his matches, training videos, especially his immaculate sense of timing while hitting the balls. I have learned a lot watching his videos, especially the improvement in my back-hand game has come after watching his videos.”

Sreshtho wants to go to Sweden for training and play in competitions with the desire of training under Waldner who is now a coach.

Sreshtho’s aim

Like all other promising young paddlers, Sreshtho also dreams of winning medals in major international competitions such as the Olympics. But now he aims to clinch the national championship title at the senior level. He sounded extremely confident while commenting,

“I believe I will be able to achieve it. My hard work will give the reward.”

In India, Sharath Kamal is the favorite paddler of Sreshtho. He revealed,

“While playing for the national championship in Pondicherry I met Sharath Kamal. I have a photograph of him. Even he inspired me saying success will automatically come if I continue doing hard work.”
