Sreesanth’s Revelation Dhoni’s Hand in Crafting Rohit’s Street-Smart Cricket: ‘Even in ICC World Cup…’

As a young player, Rohit Sharma made a conscious decision to abstain from following the ICC World Cup in 2011, as his aspirations were not realized during that period. Expressing his disappointment at not being selected for the tournament, Rohit, then not yet established as a top-tier batsman, did not witness India’s victorious campaign under Dhoni’s leadership. Fast forward almost 13 years, and India found themselves hosting the 50-over spectacle with Rohit as their captain in the 2023 edition. This leadership role came on the heels of Rohit’s impressive performance in the 2019 run-fest campaign.

With aspirations to emulate the iconic Indian captain Dhoni at the One Day International (ODI) World Cup, Rohit Sharma led Team India to a flawless record of ten victories in as many matches. The Asian giants maintained their unbeaten status until the championship showdown against Australia. Unfortunately, India couldn’t overcome the final obstacle in this ICC event, as the record-time champions, Australia, surprised Rohit and his team in the ODI World Cup final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

In a recent development, S Sreesanth, a former pacer and 2011 World Cup winner, praised Rohit as an astute cricketer in anticipation of the South Africa tour. Sreesanth also made reference to Dhoni while underscoring the leadership qualities of the experienced Indian opener.

Sreesanth stated:

“He’s a street-smart cricketer and he’s somebody more like Dhoni bhai who doesn’t just get off the scene straight away. Even if the bowling’s not that great, even if the fielding’s not that great he makes sure he backs up the fielders, he backs up the fielders. It’s a great trend. Even in the World Cup, the players who were not playing he was going to them asking for suggestions. Yes, he’s the captain but he’s been there as their brother and been there as their best friend. So it’s very important. So I think that’s one of the best qualities a captain can have.”
