On Sunday, the Sports Ministry asserted that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which is currently under suspension, lacks the authority to organize the Senior National Championships. The Ministry declared that any event conducted by the WFI during this suspension period will be considered both “unsanctioned” and “unrecognized.”

The decision to suspend the WFI was made three days after its recent elections due to numerous rule violations. Subsequently, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) established a three-member ad-hoc panel to oversee the day-to-day operations of the federation.

Despite these actions, Sanjay Singh, the President of the suspended WFI, remains defiant, stating that they plan to organize the national championships soon. He emphasized that they do not acknowledge the suspension of the newly elected body or the authority of the ad-hoc panel.

The impromptu committee declared its intention to organize the senior national championships in Jaipur from February 2-5.

Over the past year, Indian wrestling has experienced an unprecedented internal power struggle. In objection to Sanjay, a confidant of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces allegations of sexual harassment, Bajrang Punia relinquished his Padma Shri, while Vinesh Phogat surrendered her Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna in protest.
