Can Corporate Participation Make Indian Sports A More Vibrant Industry?

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed to business fraternities to come forward and help in making sports a more vibrant industry in India. Rijiju was speaking in a virtual conference organized by the Conference of Indian Industry.

Sports in India have a vast potential. It can become a huge industry if all the business fraternities work together for it. Sports can become an enormous part of India’s GDP. Sports give direction to our youth. The CII can play a major role in making sports a vibrant industry.”

Rijiju was joined in the conference by his U.K counterpart, Nigel Huddlestone. (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in Sport, Tourism and Heritage)

Rijiju complimented the United Kingdom for hosting the Olympics thrice. He said it’s imminent that India will host Olympics within the coming few years. It will help India determine itself as a sports power. “India hasn’t claimed its rightful place in sports yet. We all know, the Olympics are the biggest event in sports. London has hosted thrice, Tokyo has already hosted an Olympics in 1964 and one is scheduled for this year. The Olympic movement isnt complete till India hosts an Olympic Game. We are very seriously about it.”

Rijiju added to his speech that hosting major events help in building the profile of a nation. The Sports Minister urged the industries to come forward in this regard.

“After the lockdown, sports, have resumed all across the globe. Tournaments are happening successfully again. We are hosting the Shooting World Cup in Delhi later this month. Along with it, Badminton Super Series is scheduled for May this year. I request the industries to contribute through Corporate Social Responsibility for organizing international events in India.”

“We actually need world-class infrastructure. I would like to call upon all the industries under the Public-Private partnership in helping create a mega sports infrastructure in India.”

Fit India Mission And Khelo India

The Sports Minister also spoke on the two big initiatives- Khelo India and Fit India. He appealed to corporates to launch the Fit India movement in their offices. He also said that he wants the Khelo India movement to grow within the country. The movement should reach small towns and villages too. He also said that after the Khelo India Winter Games in Kashmir this year, the Ministry is all set to start winter sports facilities in Jammu, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
