The Indian Super League has made giant steps in trying to get on the world map as far as football is concerned. Over the years, the league has attracted a number of top players in world football, albeit in their advanced years, but still managed to get the attention of the world.
It is a strategy that has been applied across the world, especially in Japan, China, the USA, and currently India, though to some extent the levels of marketing haven’t been at the required standards.
At the moment, the player with the best scoring record in the league is Ferran Corominas, a Spaniard who won the Golden Boot twice while at FC Goa, after bagging 48 goals in 57 matches in 2017/18 and 2018/19.
After Coro’s heroics, it seems Spaniards have found a home in the league and currently, five of them are among the leading scorers in the ISL. Going into the fifth round of matches, Mumbai FC leads the standings and one of the key drivers in their run has been Spaniard Igor Angulo. A former Athletic Bilbao man, Angulo didn’t have an impact in La Liga, where he played just 143 minutes across two seasons before opting out of the team. He has had stints in Poland, Greece, and Cyprus but seems to be home in India. He is currently in his second season, having scored 14 goals for Goa last season before moving to Mumbai City where he has scored five and is the leading scorer.
Aridai Cabrera Suarez
He is another Spaniard who has found India accommodating enough as he gets to the twilight of his career. The 33-year old is on his first season in the league, having joined from Las Palmas, and he is currently attached to Odisha, where he has scored three goals in four matches. His only taste of La Liga was back in 2019/20; he played two matches, featuring for a combined 35 minutes.
Javi Hernandez Gonzalez
Another Spaniard making a living in India and he is in the same team with Aridai. At Odisha, who are rating higher than last season. Javi has three goals so far and with players like him, there’s hope for better reviews for the team in the Indian Super League predictions after the team finished bottom last season. Javi is a graduate of Real Madrid.
Alberto Noguera Ripoll
This man is also doing well in India as he starts his second season with Goa in the league. Going to Match Day 5, he has already scored more than he managed last season. He has two goals in four matches, one more than last season’s tally. Ripoll has played his soccer in Spain, Azerbaijan, England and seemingly has opted to end the journey in India. He is aged 32 and the most he managed in La Liga was five minutes in two appearances for Atletico.-- Advertisement --
Hector Rodas Ramirez
He is another of the Spanish legions in India. Unlike all the others though he is a defender, and finds himself among the top scorers on his first season in the league, with two goals so far. Ramirez is one of three Odisha players in this list. He is the most experienced of the Spanish players among the top scorers, having played more minutes in La Liga and has also featured for Cercle Brugge in Belgium.
