South Asian Games 2019 Medal Update: Indians shine on 7th day

Indian athletes continued their dominant run at the ongoing South Asian Games 2019 on Sunday with another medal-heavy day in Kathmandu. Swimmers and wrestlers were the star performers as India continued to top the medal table.

The swimmers clinched a total of 11 medals including 7 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. Wrestlers, on the other hand, won all the four gold medals on offer on Sunday, helping India add 38 medals including 22 gold on the 7th day of the regional Games.

By the end of the day, the country’s medal tally stood at 252 including 132 gold, 79 silver, and 41 bronze, leaving hosts Nepal (165 medals including 45 gold, 44 silver, 76 bronze) and Sri Lanka behind.

Handball players added another gold and silver medal. Fencers were successful as well, picking up all the three gold available in the team events of men’s sabre, men’s epee, and women’s foil.

Sports Authority of India congratulated the Indian athletes for their brilliant performances on Twitter. “What a brilliant end to the week as India crossed the 250 mark, with a flurry of medals from tennis and squash, at the #SouthAsianGames.

Swimmers Shine

It was no less than a gold rush for the Indian swimmers as Kushagra Rawat picked up the first yellow medal of the day.

The swimmer reached the top of the podium with a finish of 3:49.76. His compatriot Anand Shylaja clinched the silver by putting a time of 4:01.02.

Supriya Mondal (2:02.45) took the tally to three with another gold in the women’s 200m butterfly before Mihir Ambre bagged the bronze with a timing of 2:09.14.

Indians won more gold with Srihari Natraj (24.78) and Mana Patel (28.94) winning respectively in 50m backstroke men and women’s events respectively. The 4x200m freestyle relay women and men’s teams further added more yellow metal to the list.

Apeksha Fernandes then came up with India’s seventh swimming gold of the day by putting up a time of 2:21.83 in the women’s 200m butterfly event.
