Displaying an outstanding style of punching, India’s young boxer Sonia Chahal joined MC Mary Kom (48-kg) in the final where she will be playing her final bout against Germany’s Wahner Ornella Gabriele, on Saturday.-- Advertisement --
The 21-year-old Sonia, who began competing at the senior level only since 2016, registered a unanimous 5-0 win over her North Korean opponent Jo Son Huwa, in the 57kg semifinals to reach the final in her debut World Championships.
The unheralded Sonia has a better chance in the finals as Gabriele is comparatively not a tough player.
It was no less than an achievement for the Haryana native Sonia, to reach her maiden finals in the Women’s World Boxing Championships with no major experience under her belt.-- Advertisement --
Though Sonia started slow but picked up the momentum, quite quickly. Both boxers were playing with an attacking intent and exchanged quite powerful punches.

In the second round, Sonia tries to take control over her opponent with a flurry of punches, but Jo Son Huwa didn’t stutter and gave a full counter-attack.
But Sonia took no time in dominating the game in the third round and played aggressively right till the end of the match. It clearly looked like Sonia had become invincible with her furious and clever punches on her opponent.
After the match, a happy Sonia said, “I have never imagined that I will reach the final. But it is happening and I am in the World Championships final at such a young age. I am doing this in front of my home crowd. I am very happy.”
“My coaches said my opponent won the first round and it was an even affair in the second round and so I have to be aggressive in the third if I have to win the bout. So I changed my game and played aggressively in the third round with 1-2”, added Sonia.
Talking about her opponent in the final match, Sonia said, “My opponent in the final is a hard-hitting boxer and I have to plan accordingly. I want to win the gold in front of my home crowd.”
Simranjit settles with a bronze
On the other hand, Indian boxer Simranjit lost to China’s Dou Dan in a split decision (4:1), thus settling for a bronze at her maiden 10th AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
Simranjit played extremely well in the game, but it was just a bad day for her.

Simranjit right from the beginning kept her guard close and punched against the Chinese opponent whenever she got the chance. Simranjot was extremely well at her initial stages of the second round, but Dan made her way quite slowly and cleverly.
The 21-year old Simranjit attacked back with full grit and displayed well in the final round. It looked at one moment that Simranjit would take over the game. But she only fell short with 1:4 (27-30, 30-27, 27-30, 27-30, 28-29), thus ending her campaign at the World Championships.
“I was slow in the first but picked up well in the second. In the third, I went for a full attack as advised by my coaches,” said Simranjit.
“It was my first outing in the Worlds and I am happy. I could win a bronze medal”, Simranjit added.
