Sonam Malik is a name that came into the headlines after being part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She is an Indian woman wrestler who belongs to the city of Sonipat in Haryana. 

Malik won a gold medal at the National Games. She has also won not just one, but two gold medals at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship.

Sonam Malik was born on 15 April 2002 to Rajinder Malik and Meena Malik. Her father had been a wrestler competing in local tournaments in his childhood. Another wrestler in her family had been her cousin.

Being around her father, and seeing her cousin perform in local tournaments, Sonam naturally developed a likeness to wrestling.

After a while, she got into Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Sports Complex. She was coached by Ajmer Malik there.

Due to a lack of proper infrastructure, they used to practice mostly on the ground. During rainy days, she even had to settle for practice on the roads. 

In addition to being a pro wrestler, Sonam is also pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She is studying at Jat College in Rohtak for her graduation.

Despite being only 19 years old, Sonam Malik has proved her capability as a wrestler on more than one occasion. During the early parts of her career, she took part in various local, and junior tournaments.

In 2016, She won a gold medal at the National School Games. The next year, In 2017, She won a gold in the World School Games.

She also had her life’s biggest win in 2017. That year, Sonam won a bronze medal at the Cadet Asian Wrestling Championship. She had gold at the Cadet World Wrestling Championship.

2018 was a mixed year for her, as she did win bronze at the Cadet Asian Wrestling Championship. But, failed to defend her gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship. She had to settle for bronze.

The next year, she won her second gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship. In 2020, Sonam Malik defeated Olympics Bronze Medallist Sakshi Malik.

The 2016 Rio Olympics star was defeated by the younger, to everyone’s surprise. She defeated Sakshi Malik not once but twice.

The first time, she defeated her in the Asian Championship trials. The second was during selection for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers.

In 2021, Sonam Malik became the youngest Indian Woman Wrestler to qualify for the Olympics. She qualified for the 62 kg category by reaching the finals in the Asian Olympic Qualifier tournament.

However, her debut stint at the Tokyo Olympics didn’t last very long. She was defeated by Bolortuya Khurelkhuu in her opening bout by a margin of 3-2.
