Smriti Mandhana Shines as India Takes Series lead 2-0 Against New Zealand

The Indian Women’s Cricket team have beaten New Zealand by a comprehensive margin of 8 wickets in the second ODI at Mount Maunganui on Tuesday, 29 January 2019.

Chasing an average score of 162, opening and attacking batsman Smriti Mandhana played her feisty game scoring 90* runs off 83 balls which included 13 boundaries and a six. Captain Mithali Raj also played the captain’s knock, providing able support to Mandhana. Raj scored 63* (111) including 4 fours and 2 sixes.

India vs New Zealand – As it happened:

New Zealand women batted first and had a disastrous start. The experienced Jhulan Goswami got rid of New Zealand great Suzie Bates in the first over itself for zero. Sophie Devine also could not last long as Shikha Pandey found her in front of the stumps. Ekta Bisht got two back to back wickets in alternate overs that of Lauren Down (15) and Amelia Kerr (1). Maddy Green also couldn’t last long. She was bowled by Poonam Yadav after making 9 (28).

New Zealand Innings

For New Zealand, it was only the captain Amy Satterthwaite who held on to one end when wickets were tumbling on the other end. She made 71 (87) including 9 boundaries. As soon as her wicket fell, the White ferns fell like a pack of cards and were bowled out for a below average score of 161. They didn’t even play the complete 50 overs of the match. They were bowled out under 45 overs.

For India, Jhulan Goswami picked up the most 3 wickets while Ekta Bisht, Poonam Yadav and Deepti Sharma picked up 2 wickets each. Shikha Pandey claimed 1 wicket.

Indian Innings

Chasing a low total of 162, India too had a shaky start. The 18-year-old sensation Jemimah Rodrigues was removed by Anna Peterson for zero. One down batsman Deepti Sharma too didn’t last any longer. She made 8 (11).

Captain Mithali Raj joined forces with Smriti Mandhana and the duo put curtains on the wickets column. Mandhana riding on a century in the previous game played attacking Cricket. Her innings was laced with 13 boundaries and 1 six. Her strike rate was 108.43.

The poster girl of Indian Women’s Cricket as Mandhana is called, scored 90* off 83 balls. Captain Mithali Raj scored 63* (111) including 4 fours and 2 sixes. The duo added together with a 151 run unbeaten stand to guide India home easily.

India won the game with 8 wickets and nearly 15 overs to spare.

“I am happy with the way the team is shaping up. I have always enjoyed batting in challenging conditions. It wasn’t easy, it required patience here. Smriti is in good form and somebody had to give her support,” Raj said after the win.
