Shreyas Iyer’s Participation in Asia Cup 2023 Uncertain Due to Back Injury

Indian Cricketer Shreyas Iyer is facing uncertainty regarding his inclusion in the Indian cricket team for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 due to his back injury. The talented batsman suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, which required surgery. As a result, he missed both the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League and the World Test Championship Final.

Iyer, who is still in the process of recovering from his injury, is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Prior to his setback, the 28-year-old was a regular member of India’s One-Day International (ODI) squad.

Unfortunately, he did not make the cut for the recently announced squads for the West Indies tour. The Asia Cup 2023 is going to take place from August 31 to September 17. Pakistan and Sri Lanka will co-host the tournament, with Pakistan hosting four matches and the remaining nine matches being played in Sri Lanka. Unlike the previous edition, the 2023 Asia Cup will be contested in the ODI format, serving as preparation for the ODI Cup 2023, set to be hosted in India in October-November.

Meanwhile, there are hopes of Jasprit Bumrah making a comeback for the Indian team during the Ireland T20Is. However, another setback looms as KL Rahul, another prominent player, may also miss out on the Asia Cup due to injury. Filling the void left by Rahul and Iyer in the middle order will pose a challenging task for the Indian management.
