The Under-19 World Cup 2018 was a breakout tournament for a handful of Indian wonderkids. Some of them have already made their mark in the IPL a few even made their international debut. One of the most appreciated aspects of the World Cup was India’s fierce fast bowling led by the famous duo – Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi. Both of them pierced through each one of the opposition’s batting at an unbelievable speed touching 145 kmph. Recently on 3 January 2023, Shivam Mavi made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium and there he picked up 4 wickets for 22 runs. He became the third Indian cricketer to take four wickets on his T20I debut. So, let’s take a look at an inspiring story of an Indian cricketer Shivam Mavi.

Shivam Mavi Early Days
The 8-year-old boy surprised coach Phoolchand Sharma when his father Pankaj Mavi introduced him. Such a small kid taking a run-up and bowling with proper action impressed Phoolchand and he started to train him as a fast bowler even though Mavi wanted to become a batsman. His professional career began when he got selected for the Delhi U14 squad. His skill and performance were a step ahead of anyone of his age. But it was heartbreaking to find out that his name wasn’t included in the Delhi U16 squad regardless of consistently good performances. This incident urged him to switch bases to Greater Noida and join Delhi Wanderers Cricket Academy. There, he improved dramatically under experienced cricketers like Anureet Singh and Parwinder Awana.
The Rise of Shivam Mavi
India’s then Under-19 coach, Rahul Dravid noticed Shivam Mavi’s bowling in the National Cricket Academy nets. It yielded him an opportunity to play for the Under-19 side of India. His amazing figures including two wickets in the debut match against England U19 sealed his spot in the U19 team and went on to play the World Cup in New Zealand. As we know, the Under-19 World Cup is the biggest stage for the exposure of young talent. The finest teenage cricketers prove their path through the World Cup performance and Shivam Mavi did exactly that. He got nine wickets in the tournament bowling economically at a rate of 4.12 runs per over.
The sharpest weapon in his arsenal is the inswinger. Batsmen had a tough time tracing the line of the ball which is released at a pace of 145 kmph and swinging far into the stumps. In the first match of the tournament against Australia, he nearly bowled a 149 kmph delivery which shook former cricketers including Ian Bishop and Sourav Ganguly. Pairing up with his partner Kamlesh Nagarkoti, they were arguably the best fast-bowling duo India ever had in a U19 tournament. As the tournament went on its course, the IPL auction for the 2018 season happened. Mavi who had a base price of 20 lakhs was sold to KKR for 3 crores. He was signed by Gujarat Titans for Rs. 6 crore at the IPL 2023 auction in Kochi.
Shivam Mavi IPL
Mavi made his IPL debut against SRH in the 2018 season. For KKR, it was a tournament dominated by their spinners, so Mavi did nothing exceptional in the matches he played. He took 5 wickets from 9 matches at an average of 54. Not the start he expected to have considering the way he played the U19 World Cup. To make things worse he couldn’t appear in the 2019 edition due to an injury. But the 2020 IPL was a decent one as he scalped nine wickets from eight matches at an average of 23.55.
Now, Shivam Mavi will play for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023. He was signed by Gujarat Titans for Rs.6 crores at the IPL 2023 auction in Kochi.
Shivam Mavi Domestic campaign
After a mediocre 2018 IPL performance, Mavi made his List A debut in a Quadrangular Series played between A sides of Australia, South Africa, and two Indian sides. His first-ever List A match for Uttar Pradesh was in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy against Saurashtra. Mavi brought in a solid performance grabbing a hattrick announcing his arrival in the domestic circuit. His Ranji Trophy advent was even more delightful. A debut 4 wicket haul against Goa to bowl them out for just 152 and a five-wicket haul in the very next match against Odisha. So far, Mavi only played six First-Class matches in which he took 25 wickets counting a fifer and three 4-wicket hauls. He also made some valuable runs at the end of the innings and presented himself as a bowling all-rounder.
Legends of the game heaped praise on young Mavi so early in his career. Former Australian speedster Brett Lee defined him as the future of Indian bowlers. But his performance in IPL needs to be more clinical because the competition among Indian fast bowlers is tighter than ever. Keeping up with these domestic stats may or may not earn him a place on the national side but IPL is the test every world-class bowler should pass. Shivam Mavi is such a prospect and Indian cricket has high hopes from him.
Shivam Mavi International Career
In December 2017, Shivam was named in India’s squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In the 2018 India Quadrangular Series, he was selected to play for the India A cricket team. Shivam made his List A debut for India A against South Africa A in the Quadrangular Series in August 2018. In India’s squad, he replaced the injured Arshdeep Singh for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
In December 2022, Shivam Mavi got his maiden call-up to the Indian cricket team for their Twenty20 International (T20I) series against Sri Lanka. At the beginning of 2023, he made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. There he took 4 wickets for 22 runs and became the 3rd Indian cricketer to take four wickets on T20I debut. His outstanding performance on debut helped India to secure a 2-run victory against Sri Lanka in the opening T20I match.
