Veteran table tennis star Sharath Kamal has reached into top-30 of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings. His teammate Gnanasekaran Sathiyan has also jumped four places to reach his career’s best 31st spot.-- Advertisement --
With 36-year-old Sharath and the much younger Sathiyan achieving their career-best rankings, the year has gotten better for Indian table tennis. Sharath held 31st rank for October and November before getting into top-30 in December.

A bright year for India in table tennis
In a remarkable year, India won an unprecedented two bronze medals in the Asian Games held in Jakarta. Sharath and Sathiyan led India to a men’s team bronze. Sharath and Manika Batra also contributed with another bronze by finishing in the top-four of the mixed doubles competition.

The other Indian in the top-100 of the men’s rankings is Harmeet Desai (100). Manika has gained a position to be 52nd in the women’s rankings and remains the only Indian in the top-100 women’s rankings.
India had also performed their best ever showing at the Commonwealth Games by winning eight medals, which included three gold medals. Manika created history by winning the women’s singles gold in the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast.
