A fifteen-year-old teenage sensation, Savitha from Chennai has made India proud. Savitha Shri B became the third Indian to win a medal at the World Rapid Chess Championship. The previous two to achieve this feat were Viswanathan Anand and Koneru Humpy.
The journey to the bronze medal
Fifteen-year-old Savitha scored 8 points from 11 rounds and thus finished third. Savitha had 6.5 points after the eighth round and increased by 1.5 points to finish the game on a high. Her chances of finishing in the top two positions were hampered by a loss to Kazakhstan’s Zhansaya Abdumalik in the ninth round. She bounced back by defeating Singaporean Qianyun Gong in the tenth round, and in the decisive round, she drew with Kazakhstani Dinara Saduakassova.
All India Chess Federation congratulated Savitha on its Twitter account. The Twitter post said, “It’s an incredible performance from 15-year-old Savitha Shri B to clinch the Bronze medal in the World Women Rapid Chess Championship at Almaty ahead of many fancied players. Congratulations Savitha!!”
