Satyajit Bordoloi is a promising goalkeeper from Assam. Representing Karnataka in Indian football, Bordoloi finally achieved the taste of success when he represented Karnataka in the Santosh Trophy 2023 and won the trophy after 54 years. Satyajit is probably the only Assamese footballer to have won Santosh Trophy. The 27-year-old star also was selected for the under-17 Indian team in 2017. But his dream of representing India was not fulfilled as he failed to prepare his passport in time. He stated,
“It was one of my dreams to win the Santosh Trophy and finally it was fulfilled. Apart from this, playing on foreign soil (Riaydh Stadium) was an additional joy for me.”
Satyajit Bordoloi: The Journey
Satyajit Bordoloi was born in Morigaon, Assam. He has been passionate about the game since his childhood. He was called up in the under-15 and under-17 selection trials for the Assam state football team. But he could not get into the final squad. Even in 2019, he tried to get into the Assam squad with the hope of playing in the Santosh Trophy but failed.
As he was from a middle-class family, Satyajit’s father Nakul Bordoloi who died of cancer in 2017 was not supportive initially. Rather, he asked his son to set focus on study. But Satyajit was adamant and wanted to prove his mettle in football.
Then Satyajit decided to leave Assam and played for Gokulam FC, winning several championships including Independence Cup and he also had a brief stint with Kerala United before returning home. During this phase, he was called by Sporting Club Bengaluru to join. Due to his registration with Sporting Club, he was entitled to represent Karnataka in the Santosh trophy, he once dreamt of and the rest became history. Commenting on his most memorable match in the Santosh Trophy, Satyajit remembered,
“Winning against Meghalaya 3-2 in the final was the toughest match for all of us. We were determined and showed the courage to fight and win the match finally.”
The Reward of Satyajit Bordoloi
As a reward for his consistent show in the Santosh Trophy, Satyajit Bordoloi got an offer from Mohammedan Sporting for the Super Cup that has just started. But as Mohammedan Sporting crashed out in the Cup qualifiers, losing to Gokulam FC 2-5, the journey has not been easy for the Karnataka custodian. Satyajit however said,
“Now it is the time to shrug off failure and motivate myself again. I must also play I-League and ISL in near future.”
