The win not only marks a significant milestone for Shetty and Rankireddy but also for India, as it is the first-ever gold medal in the men’s doubles category at the Badminton Asia Championships. BAI President Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a reward of 20 lacs for the duo’s historic win.
The Indian pair started the game on a bright note, playing some ferocious shots and staying just behind their opponents with a score of 10-11 at the halfway stage. However, Sin and Yi took the first game. The Malaysian pair continued their momentum in the second game and took an 11-6 lead at the halfway stage. But, the Indian duo made a strong comeback, winning the game to level the match.
The third game was a nail-biting finish, with Shetty and Rankireddy eventually emerging as the winners, clinching the gold medal. This historic win will go down in history as one of India’s greatest moments in badminton.
It is worth noting that while Dipu Ghosh and Raman Ghosh won a bronze medal in 1971 when they reached the semi-finals of the competition, Dinesh Khanna remains the only gold medal winner for India in the men’s singles category in the continental championships, having won the men’s singles title back in 1965.
