Now, the fifth-seeded Indo-Ukrainian duo is all set to face second-seeded Chinese players Shuai Peng and Shuai Zhang. The Chinese pair won via walkover after Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens and Alison Van Uytvanck withdrew due to injury.
The Hyderabad-born tennis ace and her partner had their work cut down after a hard opening set. But the duo fought and won the first set in tie-breakers.
The second set was a cakewalk for the combinations as Saina and Kichenok broke their opponents in the second, sixth and eighth game to book their place in the final.
The Indo-Ukranian pair converted four out of 11 break chances they got; while their opponents converted 2 of the five break chances.
Sania and Kickenok defeated Georgian-Japan combo of Oksana Kalashnikova and Miyu Kato 2-6, 7-6 (3), 10-3. They followed it with a quarter-final win over USA’s Vania King and Christina McHale 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.
The ongoing Hobart International marks Sania Mirza’s return into the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Circuit after 2 long years. The 33-year-old was last seen in the China Open back in October 2017. Sania battled injuries before taking a break to give birth to her son Izhaan in April 2018.
