India has a set of clinical swing bowlers who could swing the bowl both ways with a free-flowing bowling action. Sandeep Sharma can be termed as one of the most underrated swing bowlers who have a stellar IPL career but never had a genuine stint with the national team. His international debut was against Zimbabwe in a T20 series of 2015. He was only lucky to feature in just two T20 matches and then waiting at the lobby ever since. Still a vital part of the SRH and Punjab state team, the Punjabi medium pacer is only 28 and his IPL performances are quite promising for the last few seasons. This is the story of Sandeep Sharma.

Started as a batsman, Sandeep switched as a swing bowler during the school days after his coach Kamaljeet Singh’s advice. As a budding fast-medium bowler, the boy from Patiala was nothing but a prodigy. Known for his accuracy and exceptional ability to produce conventional swingers, Sandeep was named to the Indian squad for the Under-19 World Cup 2010 held in New Zealand. He was just 16 then. Although people noticed the young bowler in that tournament, Sandeep Sharma’s breakout event was the 2012 U19 World Cup in Australia where the Indian junior team clinched the title under the captaincy of Unmukt Chand.
There was no surprise when Sandeep was picked by KXIP in the auction ahead of IPL 2013 because he was the joint leading wicket-taker for India in the U19 World Cup campaign with 12 wickets and bagged four of them in the final against the hosts Australia itself. In the 2012-2013 Ranji campaign, Sandeep was on fiery form taking 42 wickets from 9 matches with an impressive average of 19.41. In the same year, he became Punjab’s leading wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy scalping 10 from 6 matches. His arrival to the IPL was inevitable after such great performances.
Sandeep Sharma IPL Career
Sandeep Sharma, then and now, has been the new ball bowler who could take early wickets with his swing bowling. Sandeep was never too bad to be dropped from the squad at any point of his IPL career. Every time he had a bad match, he would return in the very next match with a peach of a performance. In his debut season, Sandeep got only 4 matches to play for KXIP and clinched eight wickets from them. That was the lowest wicket tally in any IPL season he had played. In fact, Sandeep has never ended an IPL season without taking at least 12 wickets. He became a routine bowler for KXIP during his span of 2013-2017 with 71 wickets from 56 matches. 2018 IPL auction was a mega auction where franchises could only hold on to three players before the auction. Despite showing great potential, KXIP let Sandeep go in a process of rebuilding a new core for the future of the franchise.
Sandeep Sharma SRH
SRH eventually picked Sandeep for 3 crores in the auction. The Sunrisers bowling department after the 2018 auction included Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Sandeep Sharma, Siddarth Kaul, Rashid Khan, and some young guns like Basil Thampi and Khaleel Ahmed. Their strength on paper was evident on the pitch as well. 2018 IPL season witnessed SRH defending low-scored totals against big batting superpowers like RCB and MI.
Sandeep Sharma was instrumental at the top of the innings claiming wickets of big sharks like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Chris Gayle. SRH finished on top of the table for the first time in their history but fell short in the final against CSK. Sandeep’s contribution for SRH in the last three seasons is 38 wickets from 36 wickets.

Sandeep Sharma, & Tasha Sathwick got engaged on 7 June 2018. Tasha Sathwick is a jewelry designer & a blogger. Just like Sandeep, she is also a fitness enthusiast and likes to work out.
The couple has been dating since 2015. Sandeep and Tasha got engaged and took to their respective social media accounts to share the happy news with their fans.
In the 2021 IPL season, Sandeep Sharma only played 3 matches but couldn’t make a serious impact so far. In a bowlers-overloaded team like SRH, the pressure of making it to the playing XI itself is very high, especially after Jason Holder and T Natarajan claiming sure spots. There is no doubt about the potential Sandeep has and to dismiss a player like Virat Kohli 7 times in IPL, it’s not everyone’s piece of cake. With players like Bumrah, Natarajan, Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar already donning the Indian jersey across formats, Sandeep’s only hope to get back to the blues is to deliver a superb season at the upcoming IPL seasons. India surely lacks a specialist swing bowler since Bhuvaneswar Kumar became highly injury-prone.
Sandeep has the Midas touch of sending star players back to their pavilion but his lack of expertise in death bowling and inefficiency after the powerplay overs is dragging him from making it to the national side. Sandeep’s talent has been established in the past years through IPL but he just needs that one good season to reach the zenith of his career.
