Saina was crowned the champion of the 2019 edition of the Indonesia Super 500 tournament after Carolina Marin withdrew with a knee injury during the first game of their much-anticipated final.

Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has been declared the winner of Indonesia Masters after Carolina Marin was forced to retire with a knee injury. The Spaniard was leading 10-4 in the first game when she developed an injury in the knee.

Marin looked in so much pain that even Saina walked over to the reigning Olympic and World Champion out of concern.

Indonesia Masters lucky for Saina

Saina, who had come back from behind to beat He Bingjiao in three games, had reached the final of the Indonesia Masters in 2019 but failed in the final hurdle against Tai Tzu Ying.

Saina has started the new season on a high, managing to reach the semi-final of the season-opening Malaysia Masters last week wherein she was beaten by Carolina Marin in straight games. She landed her first BWF title in two years.

“I think Indonesia is one of my luckiest places. I would like to thank all my fans. It’s my eighth final here. Would like to come next year again and see how it goes,” Saina added.

Saina also said, “I just came out of my shin injury. I was out for four-five weeks. I just wanted to play these two tournaments [Malaysia Masters and Indonesia Masters] to see how good I am.”

“I am really happy that I was able to play the semi-final in Malaysia and the final here. Hopefully, I will be in better shape and condition. Looking forward to the next tournaments.”

Gearing back from the injuries

Saina Nehwal has had her fair shares of injuries in the past. A knee injury during the Rio Olympics and subsequent surgery had affected her game for quite some time.

“Over the last two to three years, I am getting injured a lot. I am trying to get better. There is no secret to injuries, you to face them and come back stronger. I would like to thank my physio, who is working very hard with me. Of course, my coaches have been supporting a lot.”

Carolina Marin had started the match very well as the India shuttler was trailing 2-8 within minutes into the first game. Saina was seemingly stunned by the pace and power of Marin.

However, Marin retired with an injury after landing awkwardly while attempting a smash. The reigning world and Olympic champion limped off the court and was in tears, being unable to bear the pain. The Spaniard decided to carry on with the match but she was not able to do so and decided to withdraw when leading Saina 10-4.

“Not good at all. She is a very tough competitor for all the players. She started off very well. It was, I think, unfortunate,” Saina said during an on-court interview at the Istora.

Congratulations Saina and we also wish one of the best badminton players, Carolina Marin a speedy recovery!
