The motivational life story of Mary Kom
Mary kom, also known as the “Unbreakable” is an Indian Olympic boxer who hails from the North-Eastern state of Manipur. She was born on 24 November 1982 in a proletarian family. She was remarkably talented and battled her way to the top. Despite being a victim of gender discrimination, she became the only woman boxer to win medals at every format of amateur boxing. She was inspired by her father, who was a former wrestler player at his young age but he did not want her daughter to pursue the same. The success of Dingko Singh encouraged and influenced Mary to become a professional Boxer. Unlike any other woman, she was also underestimated but through her consistent hard work and dedication, she achieved her dreams and became an inspiration for the young generation.
Mary Kom Achievements
Mary Kom is a 5-time World Amateur Boxing Champion, and the only woman boxer to win a medal in the six world championships. In 2012. Mary became the only Indian woman boxer to qualify for the Summer Olympics when she competed in the London Olympics. She also bagged a bronze medal in the 51 kg flyweight category. Since November 2018, she is ranked as the No. 1 boxer in the women’s 45-48 kg category with 500 points along with Russia’s Paltceva Ekaterina. Kom is also the first Indian woman boxer to earn a Gold Medal at the 2014 Asian Games. It was held in Incheon, South Korea. And at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. She was also nominated by the President of India on 26 April 2016 as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Mary Kom has been honored with several prestigious awards including Padma Shri, Arjuna Award for boxing, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and many more for her outstanding performance. She is also an active supporter of wild animals.
